Todd Keppler 2007 Non-Typical Buck
The "Tail-Light" Buck

I am a firm believer that things happen for a reason. After spending two great days hunting with family in the southern tier, I was on my way home and got pulled over for faulty tail lights on my trailer. The next day I fixed my tail lights and proceeded to get an inspection completed. Since the inspection place was close to my parents house (which is where I hunt on occasion), I figured I could get two quick hours of hunting in before dark.

On the way back to my stand in the woods I noticed this big buck and other deer milling around. After a bit of waiting, I was finally able to get off a shot with my .44 magnum handgun. Surprisingly enough the other two deer that fled when I shot were also bucks (A bachelor party).

I knew I hit this deer, as he almost fell over while he spun around and ran off. After a little time passed I started tracking and jumped the monster in some downed tree tops and watched him slowly walk away. It was getting close to sunset so I elected to back off and get some help. After calling and discussing the situation with my brother-in-law, we decided to go back out and track the deer since the whether forecast was 100% rain by morning. After about an hour of tracking, we came upon the deceased deer.

So after hunting two days far from home, I shot this thing just about in my backyard. I should also thank the Gentlemen who gave me the ticket the night before, as I would not have been in the woods hunting that day. My brother-in-law, the expert deer tracker, coined this deer the "Tail-Light-Buck".

Hi Todd,

Herb S. from work sent this picture to me, nice buck and story. It's ironic to see the rack on your trophy, he looks like an 8-pointer I took a couple years ago. Mine had a 17" inside spread and scored 120 on the BC scale . I would be courious to know how yours scores.

Way to go!!
Please post the B&C score when you get it.

Can't wait to see it mounted.

Hi Joe,
I was shooting a Ruger Super Redhawk with 2.5 x 9 Leupold
scope. I used a hand loaded 240 grain XTP hollowpoint.

Very nice! What make was the handgun? What round? Was it scoped?
