He's Back! 12-Year Old Bags Two Birds

Mike Sinistore, Spring Gobbler, Westchester County, New York
May 24, 2008, 18 lbs., 10" beard, just under 1" spurs.

First I would like to say congratulations to Mitch DeHond on a wonderful and "easy" (as he put it), turkey season. As I went back to check the spelling of his name I see a new gobbler was harvested by this young hunter. Congratulations again and that is a great picture of the boys heading home.

Harvesting my one and only tom wasn't as easy for me this season. Begining right from day one it was a difficult season. May 1st I entered the woods and I heard gobbles all around me, seeing only hens and and this is how the story remained for the next three weeks. I would call and receive answers but no sight of a tom. May 24th at 5:00am I set up my decoy at the edge of a freshly planted cornfield. I made a few calls and heard nothing. At 6:30am I was about to pack it in and said to myself, "just stay until 7." At 6:45am four hens, a jake, and tom himself came quietly in. Tom approached my decoy and I shot him at about 30 yards, finally!!!!!!! It took me a lot longer to harvest my turkey these year and it was frustrating and at times discouraging, but as all hunters know you can't harvest game if you're not in the woods. Congratulations to all of you on a successful season!
