TheEmperor Strikes Again

Tony Portello, 2008 Spring Gobbler, Chautauqua County, New York
This bird is 20-1/2 lbs. 9" beard and 1 inch spurs, taken at 10 AM on Friday May 16th.

I had been hunting on the Balsam Hill Tree Farm all morning, and had not heard a single thing until I was about to come out of a thicket area into a Christmas tree field. I was yelping and cutting with my Primos slate call, using a wooden striker. I stopped next to a birch tree and a small growth of balsams and yelped twice. Not expecting anything, all of a sudden a gobble startled me.

I crouched down on the left side of the trail, and cut a little, gave him one yelp, then he gobbled again, at about 70 yards away! I couldn't see him as the woods was thick, till the break into the open field. The position I was in was not comfortable, so I settled into a prone position, propped my Mossberg 835 Ultimag, Red Dot 30 Site, using Remington 3-1/2" 5 shot magnums, on my left hand, elbow on the ground. My right hand was near the trigger and safety, and with the slate call on the ground , putted and purred twice. He gobbled closer, and was rounding the bend, to my location! My first thought was, "I cannot believe it is happening this fast!" He gobbled one last time, and came into view. Ten seconds later, I put the dot on his head and fired one shot at 30 yards!

He is now in the freezer and waiting to be enjoyed. Very many thanks to Bill and Nancy King, owners of the Balsam Hill Tree Farm. They are very wonderful people, and always a pleasure to be at their farm.

Thanks! Your bird was really nice also. Bit of a rough season, surprised I finally got one. Not much activity from the Toms this year. Congratulations to you too, now the anticipation of fall............

Correction on the county. Franklin County not Chautauqua county. :)
