New York DEC Submits New Bills for Legislation
Junior Big Game Hunting, Crossbows for Seniors & Disabled People, Stiffer Fines
The DEC Announced today that the following bills pertaining to hunting in New York will be introduced in the 2008 Legislative session.
  • Allow 14 and 15 year olds who possess a small game license to hunt big game with a firearm under the supervision of a person 21 or older who also has at least three years of big game hunting experience.
  • Allow the use of crossbows for Senior Citizens and persons with disabilities.
  • Allow the DEC to regulate pheasant and quail Statewide.
  • Increase penalties for wildlife violations in New York including the jacking of deer.
There is more including a trapper mentoring program for youths under 12, taking snapping turtles, and using live-restraint cables for trapping. You can read the press release here
http://www.dec.ny.gov/press/42553.html

Looks like the State is starting to implement some of the things that the public has desired for the past couple years. What do you think?

Hey I am a active 14 year old hunter and I would love for this bill to be passed. I already hunt turkeys and squirrels and other small game with my father ( who also wants the bill passed). New York is losing younger hunters and hunters all together. It needs to get younger kids like me to become active in outdoor activities such as hunting. New York has the strictest youth hunting laws in the country and even with the bill passed it still will have the strictest laws in the country!!! I personally cant wait until I can bow hunt this year but I have to wait two years before I can gun hunt?!?!? come on!!

It's a good start in the right direction. I agree with all of them. I still think a minor at the age of 12 should be able to hunt big game if he is mature and responsible enough. Both my sons were target shooting 22's and 410's at the age of nine. Both were more than able to big game hunt at 14. Crossbow should be allowed. I really don't think crossbows will bring in many new hunters. I do think it will give hunters another tool of choice. In response to Anonymous 10:10:37 ,I am sure slob hunters/poachers are using crossbows now anyhow. I do believe 99.9% of outdoorsmen are ethical. (Just because 21 year olds can start drinking doesn't mean they are going to become alcoholics.)

Why do people have a problem with someone using a crossbow. Many new bows made are 10 times better then a crossbow. My dad just turned 63 this year and owns over 350 acres of land.He is a grape farmer and has worked all his life.He has a bad back that has forced him where he can not bow hunt like he use too.So what is wrong with him wanting to bow hunt and use a crossbow. To many bow hunters are all for themself. If crossbows where to become legal, i would still take my bowtec to the woods, but , might be interested in trying a crossbow as something different once in awhile. You still are going to have poachers, no matter if they are legal or not.All hunters, Bow,Gun,Crossbow, Trappers need to join all as one, instead of this stupid in fighting, or someday we will have nothing.

1.No, It is a honor they should look forward to when they are reach sixteen if they are true sportsmen. Some are mature enough and some are not. For those who are not mature enough the risk is to great.
2.Absolutely not! Their will be more injured and dead deer not being used and more illegally taken. The crossbow will open a whole new avenue of poaching. If the sportman is to disabled to use the bow how can they take care of their deer. How can they get in to the woods safely. My suggestion is that go to a hunting preserve and hunt there.
3. They do any way regulate the pheasant and quail.
4.The effort to catch them would help alot. The penalties are already there. Just use them.

I'm a older bow hunter (50) with a bad back. I've never left a deer, I shot, in the woods to rot. And never will.If I can't drag it out somehow I won't shoot. I do see the day coming when I will be unable to pull and hold a bow.A crossbow would allow me to hunt longer in my life.Besides the number of car-deer accidents has grow by hundreds thru-out the state. I suppose its better to see the deer die that way.

I agree with you. We have hunters who hunt by car only. They ride around in the cars shooting even if the land is posted. They use crossbows and guns. Some times they pick up the deer if it is a large buck and show it off and have it mounted. amazing

I love them all, don't know much about quail & pheasant but they all seem good to me, especially the earlier age for deer hunting.
