Special thanks to Harold Palmer of the
New York State Conservation Council, Inc. for alerting us to this.
New York Governor David Paterson has signed the Junior Big Game Hunting / Trapper
Mentor Bill in to law. The Junior Big Game Hunting / Trapper Mentor Bill will allow
14 and 15 year olds in New York to hunt big game with a firearm under the following
conditions:
- Youth must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian or youth mentor who is 21
or older and has three years of big game hunting experience.
- Youth must be accompanied by parent, legal guardian, or youth mentor is licensed
to hunt big game and is designated in writing by the parent or legal guardian.
-
Youth must always be within the site of parent, legal guardian, or youth mentor.
Small Game. In addition, the law will also allow youths who are 12 and 13
to hunt small game with and licensed person who is 21 years of age or older.
Trapping. Youths under 12 years old can also accompany an experienced and
licensed trapper prior to completing the mandatory training required.
The bill is effective immediately and will apply to the 2008 hunting season.

pa has been doing this for a long time. but in pa they can hunt big game with there parents by there side at the age of 12. ny should also be at the age of 12! almost every town i know of in this area, thats tioga county, has taken everything away from our younger people. then they wonder why there is so much crime involving our young kids. hunting, fishing, and sports like that should be more geared toward our youngsters. after all they are our future! if you dont teach them while they are young and eager they go do other things!! go ny
