Hunting Licenses in New York State can be purchased from licensing
agencies that have the DECALS system. DECALS stands for Department of
Environmental Conservation Automated Licensing System.
The DECALS system went in to place in August of 2002. If YOU HAVE purchased a
hunting license from the DECALS system in the past (i.e. puchased a license since
August 2002) then
you can renew your hunting license online online.
You will need your customer ID number which can be found on any hunting license
purchased after August 2002.
If you HAVE NEVER purchased a hunting license from the DECALS system (i.e. have not
bought a license since August 2002)
then you must visit a DECALS agent or you can apply by mail.
If you want to buy your license from a store then you must make sure they have the
DECALS system first.
Don't assume that any bait shop or sporting goods store will have it. Many of them
do not. If you purchased a license in the past from a sporting goods store then they
MAY NOT have the system. Many of them stopped selling licenses when the system
went in to place. Call first. Your best bet is any Walmart or local Town Clerk.
Even then you would be wise to call first.
Proof of Hunter Education Courses
Proof of hunter education courses or a license from a previous year is required to
purchase a New York State hunting license. If you are a non-resident then a previous
hunting license or proof of hunter education course from your State will work. Please note
that to hunt archery in New York you must also have proof of a bowhunter education
course or a bow license from a previous year from New York or your State.
Deer Management Permits
If you will be purchasing a big game license to hunt deer then you may want to also
apply for DMPs (Deer Management Permits). You get to choose two areas for a permit.
You will want to be familiar with the Unit Numbers for the area you hunt and the
selection process.
See below.
You must buy your hunting license no later than October 1
to be eligibile for DMPs. If you miss this deadline then you may be able to
still get a DMP on November 1 when leftover permits become available. It is
a first come/first serve process and you must also get them in person from a
DECALS outlet.
