The Emperor's Corner
Westchester County - A Big Buck Bow Only Haven?

I really hate hunting blogs because they just do not work that well in the hunting world. Often, they get long-winded and god knows I do too. The only blog I have ever seen in the hunting world (period) that is done right and works well is Marc Alberto's NYBowhunter.com. It is updated almost every day and has short, relevant content with some pretty interesting stories and insights. Maybe if I change the name of this section to Empire Tidbits and talk a little more about our members then I will like it better and it will come across better. We'll keep shooting.

Speaking of members and "keep shooting", Mike Sinistore (that is him to the right) really threw everyone for a loop this week when we posted pictures of two bucks and a doe he shot IN ONE DAY during archery season in Westchester County. How can that be possible? This must be a joke. No one would kill two bucks in one season and brag about it on a Website would they?

Unbeknownst to us, and others of the Empire Hunting faithful, Westchester County is bow only. As I understand it, you can actually take a total of three bucks during the archery only season in Westchester County that ran from October 13th to December 31st in 2007. One on the regular season tag, one on the either sex tag, and another on a special bonus permit you can get from the DEC if you harvest a doe beforehand.

A sweet deal I might add and what a sweet set-up - two mature bucks and a doe on the ground in roughly 20 minutes. Most of us could barely target practice with three arrows from a tree-stand in that amount of time. You see what you can learn at Empire Hunting?

You can read a little about Westchester County's special seer season here but we would heavily suggest anyone hunting in Westchester County to contact the DEC to make certain about legalities. It is not all that clear on their Website and god knows we are not an authority on hunting seasons in New York. Hell, we thought Mike sent us pictures of an illegally shot buck!

Again, as I understand it, Westchester County is largely urban where you may be listening to the neighbors argue while you are sitting in your treestand. It is tough to find parcels to hunt but the rewards can be huge if you find one.

Mike's friend, John Bertorelli, also sent us the following photos that he and his buddies took in 2007 in Westchester and Rockland Counties. Rockland is right accross the Hudson from Westchester and the conditions are the same. I do not have exact names and details but these are some nice bucks - at least by my standards.

RIP Ole Drop Tine
And then there is Ole Drop Tine - a buck that John had been watching for over 2 years. You can see Ole Drop Tine on John's trail camera below. He went looking for his sheds last week and found his carcass instead. He was either hit by a car or gut shot by a poacher they figure. As John said, "RIP Ole Drop Tine."
