Your Deer Mount. Taxibutcher or Taxidermist?
Wednesday, March 26, 2008
A lot of people just don't know what a good deer mount is. Period. In general, I think it is hard for most to tell. A lot of people go to a taxidermist to get a mount done and come home with deer like figure with a rack of horns on top of it's head. It is so easy to see a hack and whack job but all anyone ever seems to care about is the rack.

DEC Starting to Make Sense. Will it Continue?
Wednesday, March 12, 2008
The recent bills submitted for 2008 legislation address some of the issues that New Yorkers would like changed. While they do not feature anything drastic such as Statewide antler restrictions, they do feature one bill that many have wanted for a long time - lowering the hunting age. This bill makes a lot of sense compared to bills in recent years.

Asking Children to Recruit Parents in to Hunting
Saturday, March 08, 2008
We had a recent discussion on The Empire about a proposed law in West Virginia that would allow school to teach hunter education in school. Last Friday that law passed for schools that can product 20 students who have interest. That certainly is going to be a time saver for parents who need to put their child through hunter education. But what about the parents? Is teaching hunter education in school really going to increase license sales?

Antler Restrictions in State Parks?
Tuesday, March 04, 2008
I did not hear anything about this until someone mentioned it in the Message Boards. Apparantly, Letchworth State Park adopted a 3 point on one side rule last year. I certainly do not recall it making news.

Spring Turkey Season - The Only Season Where Lack of Opportunity Has Not Left Populations Out of Whack
Monday, March 03, 2008
NYHuner made an interesting post of the Waterfowl message board about the recent addition of the March Goose Season. We were discussing the season and how the lack of land to hunt has created an over-abundance of geese. In the post he states, "Knocking on doors was good enough at one time, it seems that today when you knock you should have your check book with you."

If You Give Hunters the Tags Then They Will Shoot the Deer
Thursday, February 28, 2008
I wish I could find the numbers prior to the 1994 but I cannot. What I do know is that the 1993-1994 winter was harsh. As you can see, it took a toll on the deer take for a few years before skyrocketing again and then falling again after the harsh winters we had a few years ago. Or was it the harsh winters? It is hard to tell.

Turkey Hunting? Can't Wait. Seriously
Wednesday, February 27, 2008
The days are getting longer and the air is starting to feel like spring. For a brief moment I find myself in in the middle of running down the list of spring activities - smelting, bullhead fishing, crappie fishing, turkey hunting. As soon as I hit turkey hunting it feels like I just put my two front teeth in to the middle of an ice cream cone.

Westchester County - A Big Buck Bow Only Haven?
Tuesday, February 12, 2008
I really hate hunting blogs because they just do not work that well in the hunting world. Often, they get long-winded and god knows I do too. The only blog I have ever seen in the hunting world (period) that is done right and works well is Marc Alberto's NYBowhunter.com. It is updated almost every day and has short, relevant content with some pretty interesting stories and insights. Maybe if I change the name of this section to Empire Tidbits and talk a little more about our members then I will like it better and it will come across better. We'll keep shooting.

Is Your ECO AWOL?
Friday, November 23, 2007
Believe me, I do not fancy myself to be Mr. Outdoor Writer or anything. But I like to do some jogging down of random thoughts because I enjoy it and..... well...... it is my Website :) But as much as it is my Website - it is your Website too and I have enjoyed reading all of your comments and opinions about deer hunting in New York the last few months. There are some very bright individuals who participate here who have made some wonderful suggestions for improving New York deer management in my opinion. I especially love the people who support a one buck per year rule!

Do You Really Know Your Gun? - Part II
Thursday, November 15, 2007
I wrote this the other day, Do You Really Know Your Gun?. In short, I tried some of the 2,000 feet per second slugs on the market and they did not shoot very well. Convinced they should shoot good, I thought I had a problem with my gun as many reported awesome groupings with them. I have now talked to several people including a guy at the range the other day with a brand new Beretta Extrema2 that was not shooting those slugs well either.

Do You Really Know Your Gun?
Saturday, November 10, 2007
Many New York hunters will likely be heading out to shoot the gun this week as we near the regular gun season opener. Some of you may have been practicing already but I know New York hunters and most will probably do their sighting in this week after work sometime. Slugs traditionally have had a bad reputation for accuracy. But in recent years we have seen better slugs hit the market with better luck getting them to deliver at once unheard of distances. That lends to the notion that a shotgun slug can be deadly accurate and one should expect solid accuracy if you are willing to spend a little more for your ammo. Which begs the question - How well do you know your gun? Maybe not as well as you think.

Public Land - Ya Just Never Know
Tuesday, October 16, 2007
Yep. That's me back in my heyday. I went the CVS and took this old photo and had it converted to digital format. The year was 1992. That was a big buck in New York for that time and it was only borderline New York State Big Buck Club. I won 3 big buck contests including a free mount from Streeter Taxidermy in Ontario, NY and placed 16th in the New York Sportsman Big Game Contest. It was my first deer with a bow.

New York's Regular Gun Season - How Willing Are You to Change?
Thursday, December 21, 2006
The Empire Deer Hunting Survey was recently added to the Empire Hunting Website. I have been pleased with the participation and I would like to thank everyone who took the time to take the survey. If you have not taken it, and you hunt in New York, you can take it here. We kindly ask that you do not take the survey if you do not hunt in New York.

Will We have to Walk-out or Will Someone Help Us Walk-In?
Thursday, December 14, 2006
On a recent drive to one of my "secret spots" I was met with posted signs claiming "so and so hunting club" had leased the land. I have remained in close contact with the landowner over the years and this was certainly news to me. Upon driving to his home to get the scoop he had no idea who had put up those posted signs and I was allowed to hunt there. Of course, people are going to do things like this if they know a landowner has a passive personality and the fact he let them get away with it leads to an uncomfortable hunting situation. But that is another story for another time. What I did find discouraging was when he informed me that if Steuben County ever goes to a rifle season he will DEFINATELY be leasing his land. I love hunting this property. It is big, a long walk to get in, and I see lots of game. Will the last time I went in there be the last time for good?

The Ever So Elusive New York Mountain Lion
Thursday, September 28, 2006
I had to start a Cougar forum with the recent Cougar activities that have been going on in the Southern Tier near the Andover/Alfred area. It all started least week with this maybe situation which is an article that I WOULD NOT call over-exaggerated but another lacking any real hard evidence
