Gearing Up for 2008: How to Identify Button Bucks

Mountain Lions and Mule Deer - We are sure that one does not exist in the Northeast
Saturday, October 18, 2008
We have been sent the picture below a few times. We first received it on August 2, 2008. Yet, we keep getting emails and seeing postings on our Website (and others) that it was killed in various places in Pennsylvania and New York. Of course, each time we hear of it, the mountain lion was killed yesterday, last week, two weeks ago, etc...

We are not saying that mountain lions do not roam through New York from time to time. But we would like to state the obvious from the photo below.

mountain lion new york

Please take a look in the upper left hand corner of the photo. You will see a side room that has a good 20+ mule deer racks hanging. This photo was obviously taken at a taxidermist's shop. Mule deer do not exist in the Northeast. It is hard to imagine that a taxidermist in the Northeast would have that much mule deer business from out West. You will also see what appears to be an elk antler on this guy's left next to the RED broom handle.

This mountain lion was not killed in Pennsylvania or New York or any other Eastern State. According to the article below, it was hit by a truck in Arizona - a State that has plenty of mule deer and elk and mountain lions.

PA MOUNTAIN LION

As always, the DEC encourages anyone with a credible sighting to report it to them. They also have this same mountain lion on their Website, confirmed to be killed in Arizona.

That is all for now.....................

looking out of my window in november i saw a large animal and watched it because i couldnt make out what it was. then it leaped over a fallen tree and i saw the muscular shoulders and then a long tail with a white tip. I told people that that I thought I saw A mountain lion and was told that absolutely was not possible. On december 31,2008 after a 9" snowfall, I walked out of the back door to start my car and notice a line of "footprints" going across the yard starting at about 2 to 3 feet apart to about 6 apart heading toward a overflowing creek. thinking it might be a prowler who ran from the house, i was careful noy to disturb the tracks and walked to the rear of the house to examine a track that was in only several inches of snow. it was a large pawprint about 4 to 5 inches in diameter. i went back to the house and told the kids (teens) that i thought a large cat was out looking for food and to be careful, They only looked at me. Today, january 1 2009 I was sitting at the same window, at the computer, trying to look up a DEC phone, at the same time talking to my adult daughter about what i should do and who should i call when i looked out across the rising creek and there it was. I yelled for someone to come to see and two people in the house saw it. later today it re-appeared and two other adults saw it at the creek edge looking this way. there is no duobt, there is no question, there was no blurr, it was clear, it was brown, it was big, it was and is alive. for those doubters, you are wrong.

my daughter and i and a girlfriend were comming home from horse riding lessons one day over the back roads it was about 10 am and a big cat jumped out in the road in front of us out of a swampy area below town and leaped up a hill - we were in shock -it had a long tail and it was big. not your typical bobcat.

my father and i found a dead mountain lion in the adirondacks at the enterance to the land we were hunting. we both couldnt believe what we were seeing.it was 9:30 pm and snowing so we called it a night and decided to inspect it in the morning. thing was about 4 long laying down and there was 18" of snow on the ground. when we woke the next day to check it out in the day light it was gone. only patches of hair. it looked like it was hit by a car from the proximity to the road and the blood from the mouth area. if i ever see one again i will notify the dec.
