Description: Weapon: .270 winchester
Points: 10
Weight: 190
Killed: 12/8/2007 10am

Story: Last weekend to hunt and only saw a 4 point yearling chasing a doe all season. Got to the propertly about 630am on saturday so I got into the woods a bit late so I was very discouraged.

After sitting in a homemade ground blind for about an hour I decided to follow some tracks that I saw on the way into the woods. I didnt even make it 75 feet from the blind I was hunting when suddenly I spotted movement in the woods about 70 yards away.

Immediately I saw the shine of antlers so I raised my rifle and waited for the deer to step in front of my crosshair. I let out a grunt to stop the deer and fire. Immediately the deer took off but then stopped about 30 yards away. For sure I thought I missed so I let off another shot and mysteriously the deer vanished.

I went to the spot where I let off my first shot and to my suprise I found hair and splatters of dark blood but being that the deer took off I decided to go back to the house and get some friends and give the deer time to expire.

I explained that I shot a buck but I dont know how big or small for that matter. We all expected to find the 4 pointer that I previously saw so 1 hour later we returned to the last spot where I let off the second shot and found pools of blood but no deer. Then I got a yell from a buddy that he found my deer and to everyones amazement it was a beautiful ten pointer.

Somehow this buck circled and expired only 10 feet from my original shot. This was my second buck in two years after 10 years of hunting. Last year I was fortunate to harvest a six pointer but this one topped it and was also the largest buck ever harvested on the property.

i agree to let the small ones go. unfortunately my neighbors shoot whatever crosses their sights. i scout all year long and rarely ever see bucks over 2 years old so it is very unfortunate especially because the yearling bucks that i see have alot of potential with 4- 6 points minimum. this buck here must have wandered in or was spooked off his home because nobody ever saw him before.

fine looking buck there..early christmas present?!?!   my qdm farm is on the schoharie/schenectady county line..nice to see some deer taken around our area on this site too!!  if you were to let those smaller bucks walk, youd be seeing more of those nice 10 pointers on your wall bud..

but, there is nothing wrong w/ putting some fine tasting meat in the freezer late in the season too, especially after a horrible season..take it from a local hunter around your area, if you let the small bucks walk, you would see more of those big boys..   congrats

congrats on a fine buck and good story too.  it is always nice when they are bigger than you thought.  often it is the other way around!
