Empire Bucks Club Member: Kevin Harris
Trumansburg, NY- Tompkins County
Tuesday, November 11, 2008

Rack is at the taxidermist. It will be officially scored after 60 day drying period.

Kevin Harris, 15 Point Trumansburg Buck

This buck of my lifetime was shot on the afternoon of 11/10/08. The arrow was a clean pass through, but I hit him a bit farther back than intended. Not a complete paunch shot.

The buck slowly walked away after being hit. There was good blood on the arrow. I backed out and waited three hours to go in and track him. He bled up to about 250 yds. from the sight of the hit, and then stopped bleeding. I lost blood and daylight at that point.

I went home determined to go in and find him the next morning. I called in the help of NYS DEC licensed volunteer trackers who work through Deer Search Inc., and handler Kevin Armstrong agreed to meet me at the sight of the hit on the morning of 11/11. I didn't sleep a wink that night.

Armstrong's dog "Karma," and his co-tracker, Ron's dog "Effie" put their noses to the ground at last blood that morning and got right on the buck's trail. We encountered the deer a good distance from last blood in a field where it had chosen to lay down and die. Luckily it had avoided predators all night. In fact, it was still alive when Karma led Armstrong to it, but it could not get up.

I was a good distance away when they had yelled to me that they were on the deer, and I was running and trying to nock another arrow to put in the deer. Armstrong put the deer down with a pistol shot at my command out of my fear that it would get up and run before I could get there. Therefore, the buck can't be considered for Pope and Young, but is currently being debated for possible consideration as a NYS Big Buck Club record.

Thanks to Deer Search Inc. and a willingness not to give up, we were able to find my deer of a lifetime. 15 points, 192 pounds dressed weight.

Congratulations Kevin on the deer of a lifetime.Could not have happened to a nicer guy.Good luck topping that one.But then again that is what keeps us going back.As far as officially scoring the buck.I think it is ironic that as a bow ed instructor for the past ten years we preach on being humane and ethical yet when someone goes to that extent he is penalized.Come on guys and gals as hunters we had better start banding together.Give the guy a credit for doing exactley what he should have done.
