According to the taxidermist he scored about 140-145 and was 3 and 1/2 years old. I thought
he was a much older dear with all the gray on him.
I have been hunting now for about 5 years. I live in Northern NY, an area you never hear
about on the hunting shows. The first deer I ever shot at was a 14 point brute. Needless
to say, I missed. (shaking like a 16 year old after the prom!) Haven't seen anything like
that one til November 24th this year.
I arrived at my stand much later than I should
have(not sun up yet, but plenty bright!). As I was climbing up into my stand I saw a nice
doe in the neighbors field behind me about 100 yards. I hadn't been sitting there more
than 5 minutes when I heard the craziest rut Grunt I had ever heard ECHO through the woods!
I almost fell out of my stand!! I scoped the treeline and didn't see anything. Talk about
freaking out!!
Then I heard something run off through the trees and I figured that was the
buck waving his tail at me in retreat... I looked behind me again and the doe was still
there looking over to the edge of the woods, and then she took off. I took out my Grunt
call and gave it one light grunt, (just cause I could !).
Less than 5 minutes later,
about 50-60 yards out, I saw what looked like a big deer with some horns... Well I drew up
on him and laid the crosshairs just behind his shoulder and pulled the trigger. He didn't
even jump, he just started running with his head down as low as he could without touching
the ground. He didn't run more than 40 yards and piled up right in the open field!!
At this
point I knew he was a nice buck, and I sat there for at least 10 minutes to make sure he
didn't get up. I crawled out of my stand with my eyes glued on him the whole time. The
closer I got to him the more points I counted!!
He dressed out @ 208 lbs. and had 12 points
on his big ole gray faced bean!!Needless to say this was what I thought would be the deer
of a lifetime for me. One week later I was sitting in the same stand at the same time of day
and his "BIG" Brother came out. I'll be out there next year looking for him!!
