Worth the Wait! Mike Sinistore, Westchester County

Empire Bucks Club Member: Mike Herzog
Farmington, New York,
Sunday, October 28, 2007

green scored at 160 3/8, 22.5 inside spread, typical 10 pointer taken with the bow at 12 yards on the ground, offically scored on 1/20/08 by Bob Estes, and William Tyler. 158 4/8 gross and 156 6/8 net,5" bases and 26" main beams.

On the morning of 10/28/07, I was walking a drainaige ditch threw a shoulder high crop field heading toward my climbing treestand on the creek bottom. I noticed a rack moving about 80 yards to my right and coming over the crest of a hill. I kneeled down and grabbed my binoculars and glassed the buck. I knew it was a shooter at first sight. I saw that his rack was way outside the ears and he was closing the distance quickly.

I knocked an arrow and clicked my release and watched as the monster closed the distance from 80 to 30. The wind was in my favor and I had plenty of cover but I never imagined what was about to happen. I stayed motionless and watched the giant get within 15 yards. Not presenting a shot, I remained motionless tucked in the field waiting for that perfect oppurtunity. At 12 yards he turned around and started to walk the other way. I quickly drew and stood up as he looked the opposite way and knew this was the time I was waitting for.

I double checked my sights and watched the buck take his final look at me. The field was high but I was focused and my arrow was on it's way. The shot was perfect. Behind the right shoulder and going foward. I watched the buck bound over the crest of the hill were he came from and I froze to catch my breath. I noticed another deer with him and it was a doe. Maybe that was enough to calm him down while he was so close. As I turned, three more deer jumped from behind me. Talk about being in the right place at the right time!

I slowly walked toward where the buck was when I shot and marked the spot with a survey stake and pink ribbon. I walked back to my truck giving the buck plenty of time knowing from past experience not to rush in but to wait for a couple hours and let the buck expire. During breakfast with my Dad, I replayed the shot in my mind and knew the shot was perfect. We waited two and took a camera for the field shots.

We got to the spot where he stood and searched for blood, an arrow, or any sign to confirm the perfect hit. I found a pile of hair and seen his track as he slipped in the mud turning trying to turn and run. We combed the field for an hour not finding any more sign. The field was very rugged and very tough to walk but I knew the search wasn't over. I told my Dad to start making half circles and I'll keep looking for signes down low.

Within five minutes I heard my dad say stop and get an arrow ready. He thinks he sees a rack. We slowly stalked the buck ready for him to jump but he already was passed. I poked the back of his neck with the arrow and no movement. I almost fell over when I seen his rack up close. Certainly no ground shrinkage here!
