Shortened Archery Season May Not Mean Less Deer

Brandon Thomas
Cayuga County, New York,
Monday, November 19, 2007

I call this deer "crazy horns" as you can see from the picture. A typical 4 piont on one side and a fork with a small kicker on the base of the other. Gross score ~120" and nets in the 80's. Field dressed at 180lbs.

I first spotted this deer on 10/29/08 on one of my trail cameras and could not figrue out for the life of me what it was. The buck was in the distance of one of the photos so I didn't have a clear look at him...but could tell something was definately different.

I kept the camera up all fall and never got another picture of him. I finally decided I was going to hunt this buck and this buck only. On the third day of southern tier firearms season I coated myself with cover scent and started the 20 minute walk to my stand at ~3AM. I knew if I was going to get him, I had to get there extremely early.

I soaked myself with an entire bottle of Code Blue doe in heat as I walked into stand, freshened up my Tinks buck bomb, and made the final 100 yd journey to my stand. After about 30 min of sitting there in complete darkness I heard a deer walking. It got closer and then it stoppped. Then I heard antlers scraping on a tree. I was sitting there thinking, "great, a buck is nearby and all can do is listen to him scrape his antlers." Eventually he walked away.

It finally started getting light out and I could see across the corn field I was sitting by. About 7am I was focused on the 2 squirrels that were fighting about 10 feet from me when I caught movement in the corner of my eye. I slowly turned and saw a large bodied deer through the walnut tree. I raised my binoculars to get a better look and immediately dropped them to my chest. I was staring at "crazy horns"! He was about 150 yds away working towards my scent bomb when he stopped (presenting me with no shot) and stared in at the bomb...looking for the doe he could smell.

After less than a minute he turned around and started walking back towards the woods. I was freaking out, the biggest deer I have seen and I won't even get a shot! I stood up in stand to watch him, he made it the woods and started walking towards me. I found the first opening I had and put my scope on it waiting for him to walk through. He stopped in the opening and I sent my slug flying at him.

I waited 20 min and then descended from the stand and started the tracking. I found blood everywhere that he was standing and followed it. He ran 80 yds and was down. I called my buddy and we got him out of there. What a buck!
