Areas Open to Bear Hunting in New York Officially Expanded

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has officially adopted regulations to expand bear hunting opportunities in Central and Western New York. While this has been discussed quite a bit in recent months, it is now official.

Bear Hunting for the 2008 season will be open in WMUS:
  • 7M
  • 7R
  • 7S
  • 8H
  • 8J
  • 8M
  • 8N
  • 8P
  • 8R
  • 8S
  • 9G
  • 9H
That includes portions of the following counties:
  • Chautauqua
  • Cattaraugus
  • Erie
  • Wyoming
  • Genesee
  • Monroe
  • Livingston
  • Wayne
  • Ontario
  • Seneca
  • Yates
  • Steuben
  • Schuyler
  • Tompkins
  • Tioga
  • Cortland
  • Broome
  • Chenango
  • Madison
  • Onondaga
  • Oneida
* These areas include bowhunting, regular gun, and muzzleloading seasons. PLEASE READ THE REGULATIONS FOR YOUR AREA. Please also note that bear hunting in Southern Tier with a firearm does not open until November 22 - SEVEN days after regular deer season open.
