Keith Johnson, 300 lb. Bear, Webb, New York
October 5, 2008
webb new york bear 2008

It was a very hard weekend.I left on thursday from rochester and my truck broke down half way there and I didn't get back on road until next day(Friday) a little after noon.I was hunting alone.I had found a location that had all the signs of good bear activity.Plenty of fresh scat,Marks going up trees where bears had been climbing and over all the location just looked like a hot spot.I had been going to old forge on the weekend for about a month prior scounting, but it is hard to be 100% confident in any one thing. After doing every thing i could ahead of time I decided my best chance was to hunt this location the whole weekend. And that is what I did.I got there 30 minutes before sunrise, left about 11:30 and returned about 1:00,stayed until dark and did the same sunday morning.I was staying At a friends cabin and I remember about 12:30 thinking it sure would be nice to just kick back and watch football. But after all I put in to this weekend and this was my last chance I for some reason had a good feeling.I thought I had to see this through and hunt it as hard as I possibly could.

Back out and waiting I remember hearing squirrels and all the noises the woods had to offer and I think out of reaction I would look the direction the noises would come from( as well pearing the entire 360 degree veiw.

All the sudden I looked toward one of these noises to my right and to my amazement this black was about 45 yards to my right and heading right toward me on the trail i was on.It doesn't seice to amaze me when you look toward that noise and it is indeed the whole reason your out there in front of my eyes.

I'm left handed and of course the bear came in on my right so slowly I was rotating my 12 gauge remington 870 with a wonderful leupold scope shooting federal barnes expanders from my lap facing my left to the direction the bear was which was my right.Instead of rotating my body to make the shot with my gun on my left shoulder I was prepared to shoot from my right shoulder.slowly i was dropping the barrel on him when he busted me with the barrel at about 11 o' clock position.I froze as he stared at me,for some reason I just droped the barrel on him and as quick as I could see him through my scope I put the cross hair on his chest.I released the slug.feelingvery confident in the shot I was amazed that I ended up feeling the need to shoot 3 more times.I couldn't beleave how tough this animal was.

After letting the bear expire and packing my climber and gear out,It wasn't until I came back and attempted to drag him out that I relized how big he really was.No boone and crocket by any means but a true trophy especially to me being my first balack bear I've ever taken.

I went to get 2 friends and the 3 of us got him out.I am going to have him shoulder mounted s well, tan the rest of his hide.At the age of 37 this will alway's be very special hunt to me.
