Empire Home >> Hunting FAQ >> Bear Hunting in New York
|
The bear population of New York continues to rapidly expand. However, bear hunting is not permitted in many areas of New York.
Bear hunting is only allowed in the mountainous regions of New York. Those being the Adirondack, Allegany, and Catskill Mountains.
Hunters who take bears in the Northern Zone of New York are asked to submit the lower jaw to the DEC.
Hunters who take bears in the Southern zone are asked to simply take their bear to a local DEC office for examination.
You cannot bait bears nor hunt them with dogs in New York. You can only take bears during daylight hours.
Bear seasons vary widely based on the area of the State. Bear seasons in the Northern zone open very early in the fall while bear
season in the Southern zone runs in conjunction with archery deer season but closes and does not usually re-open until one week after
the opening day of regular (rifled) deer season in November.
Bears are popping up all over the place in New York due to abandoned farm land that is now becoming more mature habitat and the fact
that New York reduced bear season in New York in the 1990s. It would not be a surprise if bear hunting was expanded to new areas
of New York in coming years.
