Empire Hunting does not make any warranties to the validity of the 2006 deer harvest data. We are simply representing and analyzing the numbers the DEC has released for the 2006 deer season.

Interesting Aspects of the 2006 Deer Harvest Data
* 189,108 deer were taken in 2006. 96,569 adult bucks were taken (51.06%). Think that is a lot?
  • 180,200 deer were taken in 2005 (89,015 were adult bucks - 49%).
  • 208,406 deer were taken in 2004 (88,733 were adult bucks - 42.57%),
  • 253,088 deer were taken in 2003 (107,533 were adult bucks - 42.48%).
  • 308,216 deer were taken in 2002 (128,292 were adult bucks - 41.62%).
  • 281,870 deer were taken in 2001 (127,084 were adult bucks - 45.08%).
  • 295,859 deer were taken in 2000 (140,857 were adult bucks - 47.60%).
* In 2006, more bucks were killed than does. We went back through the records to the Year 2000 and that has never happened in the new Century. We cannot find when, if ever, that has happened. Last year was close, 49% of deer taken were bucks. But in 2004, 42.57% of deer taken were bucks. None the less, the number of bucks taken in New York has been over 40% of the total deer take since 2000 regardless of the number of doe permits issued.

* In 2006, there were 114,905 male deer killed (60.76%). That's 40,702 more male deer harvested than female deer.

* The State issued 396,500 Deer Management Permits in 2006. 63,293 (15.9%) of those DMPs were filled.

* 9,989 deer were taken with Deer Management Assistance Permits (DMAP) with 7,646 of those permits being filled in the Southern Zone.

* No new cases of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) were reported

* In most WMUs the proposed buck take objective was not met. In fact, it didn't even comes close in most areas. 17 WMUs still do not have a buck take objective set. Of those 17 counties, only 7 had a buck take of more than 1.0 per square mile.

* 1,363 ADULT MALE deer were put on DMPs in 2006

I can't believe it's suprising the buck take is going up. Look at our structure. We can assume that most hunters can take 2 bucks each. The deer management permits are not available easily and some not available at all in some areas. So it really shouldn't be unbelievable that because this state makes hunters shoot bucks and draw for DMP's that our take is the way it is. This is also why our buck doe ratio is out of whack, and most bucks are 1.5 yrs old.
Also, the numbers quoted here are estimated. Being close to the NYS Federation and conservation council (that's how I know the answer to the next statement), I bet most NY hunters have no idea how the deer take numbers are acquired.
Maybe you should do some detail on how the state goes to the butcher shops and takes down all of the tag #s. Does a check on the call in reporting and figures that if the deer at the shops are at 50% call in ratios that the nuber of call ins + 50% is the deer take of bucks does and fawns. Intersting? Also, nothing happens to the hunters that don't call in there deer.

Can you tell me how many bucks and does were taken on opening day in 2006?
