8 point. I have not currently gotten him scored yet .

Tara Giali, 8 Point Buck, Alma, New York, Allegany County
All hunters have a story but mine is very differentand is dedicated to my loving husband Scott!

About five years ago my husband's friend bailed on him Thanksgiving Day. I was the worry wart and didn't want him to go out alone, although he had for years. I thought It would be nice to sit quietly in the woods and go for a little nature walk so he wasnt by himself.

Well a little nature walk turned into a full day of walking and looking for deer until I couldn't pick up my feet anymore to get over the smallest of logs. I was so tired and couldn't understand why anyone in their right mind would want to go hunting if it was like that especially when we didn't see any deer that day.

Well, the next year came and he said it was a tradition and I had to go with him on Thanksgiving day. Remembering the year before, I told him I would go but I was going to carry a gun and shoot a deer. And that is where it all began... My love to hunt with my husband!

So, the great sport he is, he handed me his favorite gun and some of his hunting clothes and in the woods we went. I had taken my course and had shot guns before but never at an animal other than a woodchuck.

My first deer was one that someone had wounded and never found. We followed the trail for a little while when she jumped up and came running at me. As she ran by me and jumped the bank I shot and she went down. My husband was as excited as I was... my first deer.

Then he bought me all the clothes I needed so I didn't have to share his and bought me my very own gun. The husband and wife team really began.

Every year he takes the day before opening day off to go set our stands up and get all our stuff ready to go in the morning. He always gives me first shot and lets me know when he sees something coming. I shot my first buck with him right there. It was a 1 horned spike during New York season but it was a buck and he was as proud of it as I was! I know most people get excited over Monster Bucks but your first Buck should be special no matter what the rack is!

Then I shot a 3 horn buck and, again, he was just as excited for me as I was! He always puts our tree stands near each other so he can be there for me anyway he can! We hunt NY and PA both and this year on opening day of PA season I shot a 5 point with his gun that he let me borrow and he got an 8 point with a half a rack. We were both so excited and I told him that I was stealing his gun. I was half joking. What a day. Both of us got a buck and that was my new record.

I shot my first Coyote two days later again with his gun and off to the taxidermy we went. It was my first and my husband wanted to get it mounted for me.

He goes on every drive and lets me sit hoping that I will get the big buck I dream of and every hunter dreams of! I would sit in a spot and see doe and the next day someone else would be there and see a buck. I kept asking him why I couldn't shoot a big buck and when was it my turn. He just kept telling me that it took him years and I was doing everything right and some day it would pay off and I would get the big buck. Well, he wasnt kidding.

On December 6th we were on a drive and he came upon some BIG tracks headed right at me when he heard the bang and my voice on the radio saying I had a deer down. I was stunned when I saw this deer with a big rack walking in front of me. Was this the one I have been waiting for? Oh yes I believe it is.

I was so excited that I was shaking and could hear my heart pounding out of my chest from the excitement. I took some deep breaths and waited for a open shot. I couldn't believe the sight when I got up to the deer. He had an incredible rack and I made a perfect shot. What more could a girl ask for?

Luckily the drive was over and my husband came to see what I had gotten. I was so excited I could barley breath and he was just as excited as I was! We both just stood staring at this amazing 8 point I got with his gun! I think it was at that moment that my cousin told him that he thought he would never get his gun back and I had to agree. He just smiled.

I would never have shot that deer if it wasnt for him. I know alot of deer camps are about the guys hunting together, father and sons, brothers, buddies, but my husband has included me and has taught me everything I know about hunting. Words could never explain how thankful I am to him for all the years he has spent sharing his love of hunting with me!

So for my pictures I had to wear my favorite hat. As a matter of fact, I do hunt like a girl!

Tara also took this Pennsylvania Coyote the week before.

Thats a great buck Tara, congrats! The story of how you started to hunt is so similar to my experiences with my wife. I bought her a new gun last year and she shot a spike her first buck and your right it was very special to her and I. This year I tagged out first day with a nice buck and my wife went out every day she had off by herself, of course I am only a phone call away ready to get a babysitter. No luck for her this year but she let a young spike and a 3 point go by. More importantly she loves being in the woods. Maybe luck will come with muzzleloader.

Its so nice to see fellow female hunters. There are but just a few of us and when we bring home kill like that it shows that we can not only do it. But we can do it well. You should be very proud of yourselve for getting a nice deer like that in such a male dominated sport. The hat you wore in your pictures, did it come from dicks sporting goods? I used to have the same hat but a friend of mines cousin took it and I have yet to get it back after 8 months. I have combed the internet and our local dicks and cant find it anywhere. Im contemplating just getting a new one made but I recall a tag sewn into the inside of the cap on the left side I believe. And I was wondering if there was a manufacturers website or something on the tag that might help me track down a new hat. Thanks for all your help and I wish you the best of luck next year during deer season. Happy hunting!
